Job description
Senior Data Analyst - (Shipping Asia Pacific)
Do you have the drive and aptitude to turn ideas into reality? Do you share our passion for the environment and harnessing technology to decarbonise our society? Do you love number crunching? Do you know or want to learn how environmental policy and politics can transform markets, and have an interest in shipping and sustainable fuels? If you do, this may well be the job for you. We are looking for a Sustainable Shipping Analyst. This is a role based in Europe but with a specific focus on shaping new policies in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
The position requires a person with strong analytical, coding and research skills. Communicating complex data in a way that is both accessible and impactful is key for our advocacy. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to carry out technical analyses related to maritime transport and alternative fuels using T&E’s Excel and Python-based models, and to translate them into simple and persuasive data and policy messages.
In 2025, we are expanding our operations into the Asia-Pacific region, with Singapore - the world’s largest transshipment and bunkering hub - as our starting point. We are looking for a candidate to be based in T&E’s Brussels office (experienced candidates based in London or Paris may also be considered), who will support colleagues in our APAC offices with technical
analysis, data and research.
Main functions of the role:
● Being a key part of T&E’s Shipping and Trends & Analysis teams, focusing on our analytical work for the APAC region on maritime transport.
● Researching and analyzing technological and economic aspects of energy efficiency, alternative energy, such as hydrogen, synthetic fuels, and electricity, for ships and ports.
● Analyzing and dissecting data as well as complex policy issues from a variety of sources including scientific studies, reports and models.
● Developing briefings and inputting into advocacy and campaign materials based on robust data, evidence and argumentation in order to reduce the climate impact of maritime transport in the Asia-Pacific region.
● Presenting T&E’s technical analyses to policymakers, business leaders, civil society actors and our international network.
Job requirements
The following skills are essential to be considered for the position:
● Strong knowledge of Excel and Python and experience in working with these tools.
● At least 2-4 years of experience working with models and data in the shipping/transport, environmental or energy sectors.
● Good communication, presentation and data visualization skills.
● The ability to write in English fluently, accurately and concisely.
● Flexibility and willingness to work with colleagues across the globe. Occasional travel may be required as part of the role.
● The confidence to think and act with initiative, to engage and influence policymakers, industry representatives and other stakeholders.
Additionally, the following skills and knowledge are desirable:
● Experience working closely with stakeholders in Asia-Pacific countries.
● Asian languages (e.g. Mandarin, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean) are considered a bonus.
● Project management experience including strong interpersonal and team-working skills and a track record in delivering to tight deadlines.
Practicalities
This is a permanent, full-time position based in Brussels. While we offer a very flexible working environment, the successful candidate will be expected to spend at least two days per week in the office. Candidates with proven and relevant experience could also be based in Paris or London in exceptional circumstances. For candidates based in those cities, there is an
expectation that they will spend several days per month in Brussels.
The ideal start date for the position is 1 September 2025. We are unfortunately only able to consider candidates with the unrestricted legal right to work in Belgium (or in exceptional cases, France or the United Kingdom). The salary package depends on location and experience. We are an equal opportunities employer and offer competitive salary and benefits.
Deadline for application: 6 July 2025 Please apply through jobs.transportenvironment.org.
