Help build the next phase of Clean Cities in Italy

We’re looking for a creative, politically astute and digitally confident campaigner-organizer to help drive our next phase of growth in Italy. This is a role for someone who wants to build, test, mobilize, connect and win.

You might already have a few years of experience in campaigning, organizing, advocacy, communications or movement-building. You might have worked on climate, transport, cities, energy or another public-interest issue. You might be a digital-native organizer, a creative campaigner with strong political instincts, or a policy-minded communicator who knows how to turn complex issues into compelling public messages.

What matters most is that you can spot an opportunity, bring people together around an idea, and help turn momentum into action. In 2026, Clean Cities in Italy is entering a new chapter. We want to expand our presence beyond Milan, run sharper and more visible campaigns, build stronger local alliances, and activate more supporters online and offline. This role will be central to making that happen.

The role

You’ll help shape and deliver Clean Cities’ strategy in Italy, working closely with the Head of Italy Campaign, colleagues across Europe, and partners on the ground. You’ll lead or support campaigns, help grow our network in new cities, strengthen our supporter engagement and digital organizing, and contribute to public-facing communications and political advocacy.

Some days this might mean planning a campaign intervention, writing sharp messaging or coordinating allies. Other days it might mean speaking with policymakers, helping organize supporters, spotting a media opportunity, or figuring out how to turn a complex policy debate into something people care about. This role is for someone who enjoys both strategy and action, and who is excited by the challenge of helping build something.

This is a one-year consultancy from August 2026 to August 2027. Renewal is a strong possibility, subject to funding and performance.

What you’ll do

  • Lead one or more campaigns as part of Clean Cities’ 2026 strategy in Italy, helping refine the strategies, coordinating partners and allies, and connecting our campaigns to the wider movement for safer and more sustainable mobility.

  • Depending on agreements with external partners, oversee the continuation of our Mind the Gap! and Road Code national campaigns.

  • Support the expansion of our Milan-based Cargo Revolution and Dirty Delivering campaigns into other Italian cities.

  • Help grow Clean Cities’ presence beyond Milan, especially in cities such as Rome, Turin, Bologna, Florence, Genoa, Naples and Bari.

  • Use key political moments — including local elections and urban transport policy debates — to build alliances and create openings for campaigning.

  • Help strengthen our digital campaigning and organizing infrastructure in Italy, so we can better grow, activate and engage supporters.

  • Lead on online and offline mobilization, communications and supporter engagement efforts.

  • Work with colleagues, consultants, partners and allies across Italy and Europe to deliver ambitious, coordinated campaigns.

  • Use a mix of tools and tactics — creative, political, digital and grassroots — to build public support and pressure for change.

  • Engage confidently with elected officials, policymakers and their staff.

  • Represent Clean Cities at meetings, events and conferences. Regular travel within Italy, and occasional travel to Brussels or elsewhere in Europe.

  • Produce blogs, speeches, campaign copy, articles and social media content in collaboration with communications colleagues.

After a year in the role, success might look like:

  • One or more visible, high-impact campaigns delivered in one or more priority cities;

  • Stronger partnerships and a more active network in Italy;

  • A clearer foothold for Clean Cities in other cities beyond Milan;

  • Better supporter activation and stronger digital organizing capacity;

  • Sharper public messaging and greater political traction on our issues.

Your Profile

We’re looking for someone who is politically curious, collaborative, self-starting and excited to make things happen.

You do not need to tick every box. If this role feels like a strong fit, we’d encourage you to apply.

Must have:

  • Experience in campaigning, organizing, advocacy, communications, coalition-building or movement-building.

  • A strong interest in climate, transport, cities, energy, air quality, public space or related issues.

  • The ability to bring people together around a shared goal and turn ideas into action.

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to make complex issues clear, engaging and politically relevant.

  • Good judgement, initiative and the ability to manage your own work.

  • Confidence working across different audiences — from activists and allies to journalists and decision-makers.

  • Strong digital instincts and familiarity with the tools, platforms and methods used in campaigning, mobilization and communications.

  • Native-level of Italian and strong English skills.

  • A base in Rome and willingness to travel regularly in Italy and occasionally to other European cities.

Nice to have:

  • Experience in transport, climate, urban, energy or environmental campaigning.

  • Experience working with local groups, grassroots networks or coalitions.

  • Experience in digital mobilization, supporter journeys, CRM, email campaigning or social campaigning.

  • Experience engaging with political institutions, local government or public administrations.

  • Experience creating public-facing content or helping shape campaign narratives.

● Familiarity with Italian urban mobility debates and local political dynamics.

What we offer

  • A chance to play a central role in shaping the next phase of Clean Cities in Italy.

  • Real responsibility and room to grow.

  • Work that connects campaigning, organizing, policy, politics and communications.

  • A flexible [0.8 FTE] setup with remote working arrangements.

  • A collaborative, ambitious and mission-driven team.

  • Travel expenses covered and IT equipment as needed.

  • Co-working space as needed in our two offices in Rome.

How to apply

You can apply directly via our website. The deadline is July 17, 2026, at midnight. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Shortlisted candidates might be asked to complete a short task during the recruitment process.

zero-emission urban transport.

Clean Cities is part of Transport & Environment, Europe’s leading clean transport NGO. In Italy, we’ve built a strong reputation as a collaborative and credible voice on sustainable urban mobility. We work with local governments, campaign partners and civil society allies to push for cleaner transport, more public space for people, and a faster transition away from polluting vehicles. We’re on a mission to decarbonize and democratize transport in Italian cities.

Equal opportunities

We want to build a team that reflects the diversity of the cities and communities we work with. We strongly encourage applications from people who are underrepresented in the environmental, transport and mobility sectors. Even if you don’t meet every requirement listed above, we’d still like to hear from you.
