Deputy Director - Spain

  • Hybrid
    • Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid, Spain

Job description

T&E is Europe's leading environmental association for clean transport. Our vision is an emission-free mobility system that is affordable and has minimal impact on our health and the environment. Since our foundation 35 years ago, T&E has helped shape some of the most important environmental legislations in Europe. We pushed the EU to set the world's most ambitious CO2 standards for cars and trucks, but also helped expose the Dieselgate scandal; we have successfully lobbied for the elimination of palm oil diesel, a global ban on dirty marine fuels and the creation of the Aviation Emissions Trading Scheme, the world's largest aviation carbon market, to name just a few.

We develop fact-based solutions and concepts and create our own analyses and commission studies. We conduct an intensive dialogue with representatives from politics, business and civil society. In addition, we set up cross-industry projects with companies and organize public events on current transport policy developments. Our staff in Brussels, Rome, Madrid, Paris, Berlin, Warsaw and London work with our 63 national member and partner organisations. In total, our members and supporters represent more than 3.5 million people.

T&E is looking for a deputy director to T&E’s national office in Spain. In this role, you will report directly to T&E Spain's Director and support them in leading the Spanish program. As T&E Spain Deputy Director you will help further establish T&E as one of the leading groups on transport and energy related policies in Spain. For this, you will need to increase the profile of the organisation in the political sphere and media, develop strategies on how to translate these strategies into actual influence and lead a team that will help achieve this.

Starting from the current solid base, supported by T&E’s Spain Director, our Spanish members, the network of national offices and the Brussels office, we are looking for a person who can help accelerate T&E’s impact in Spain.

Purpose of role
The overall aim of the role is to support the Spain Director in leading T&E’s National Office in Spain and to develop and deliver T&E Spain's work programme that is focused on accelerating the shift to zero emission transport solutions.  T&E Spain's advocacy activities are strongly evidence-based and focused on the measures needed to accelerate the transition to zero emission transport in Spain. The Deputy Director will line-manage a team of two policy staff and one part-time communications expert.

Primary responsibilities

  • Providing strategic input and guidance to the Spain Director on political strategies and fundraising efforts.

  • Supporting the Spain Director in the implementation of the Spain team’s projects, by turning long term goals into short term objectives, managing budgets and staff resources.

  • Coordinate with other T&E National offices, as well as Brussels-based teams on issues that are reflected in the Spain work programme.

  • Building and maintaining contact with policymakers and T&E members working in this field.

  • Leading the work on building formal and informal coalitions with key industry players, research institutes, and partner NGOs.

  • Identifying, commissioning and delivering impactful research tailored to the needs of the policy campaigns.

  • Support the overall functioning of the team.

Job requirements

Experience

  • Five to seven years of relevant experience in project and/or team management within advocacy roles related to the transportation sector, energy sector, or government affairs.

  • Ability to analyse complex data and translate them into concrete policy and regulatory initiatives.

  • Excellent coordination skills, with an ability to engage with, build and manage multi-stakeholder coalitions.

  • Strong interpersonal and team-working skills, and a willingness to further develop a network in Spain.

  • Ability to deliver to tight deadlines; eager to learn, with a positive and optimistic attitude when faced with challenges.

  • The confidence to think and act with initiative, to engage and influence policymakers of different stripes, industry representatives and other stakeholders at the highest level.

  • Good writing, communication and presentation skills.

  • Excellent command, spoken and written, of Spanish and English.
