Energy and Climate Director

  • Hybrid
    • Brussels, Brussels, Belgium

Job description

Background:

At T&E, we believe the future of transport is inseparable from the future of energy. Our vision is bold: We want to move away from fossil fuels and clean up the energy that powers transport. We need to transform the way we power aviation and shipping sectors and turn vehicles into assets for the electricity grid, enabled by a dynamic, smart, and renewables-based power system. Our recent strategy for the next five years makes it clear: “As the energy question becomes more central to the organisation, we must ensure better organisational alignment on goals and strategy, understanding the potential and limits of the EU and national energy systems, and ensuring our strategies are coherent and not siloed. The energy team has an important role to play in this.

Description:

Purpose of role

To help turn this vision into reality we are looking for an Energy and Climate Director. You’ll play a key role in ensuring that we push the boundaries of what’s possible—whether it’s unlocking the potential of green hydrogen, maximizing grid flexibility, or ensuring the seamless integration of clean energy into the transport sector. Overarching climate goals and tools will play a key role in delivering this vision. This is your opportunity to help redefine the future of the transport system, making a lasting environmental impact at scale.

With energy becoming increasingly central to our mission, we need a strategic leader who can unify our efforts across the EU and beyond, bridging transport, energy systems and climate instruments, pushing back on false solutions and aligning all T&E policy teams to work together toward a common goal. If you’re ready to lead transformative change and help us turbocharge the green transition, we want you on our team.

Primary responsibilities

The job holder will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Leading and implementing T&E’s political strategy on energy transition and the EU’s climate framework and key overarching tools.

  • Leading a growing team of policy, campaign, and analytical staff, overseeing their professional development and guiding their work to achieve T&E’s clean energy and climate instruments priorities.

  • Supporting the building and implementation of national strategies in Europe and Asia.

  • Leading fundraising for the energy and climate team and the organisation.

  • Further developing T&E’s advocacy strategy towards high level EU, international and national regulators, politicians, and media, presenting at high level meetings and events.

  • Coordinating policy positions and strategies with other Directors and Senior Directors.

  • Leading and guiding the team in efforts to build partnerships with key industry players, funders, NGOs, T&Es members and other civil society organisations.

  • Maintain and grow T&E’s media impact in key European and international media markets.

Commissioning and delivery of impactful research, both in-house and externally (including market research, emissions analysis, etc.).

Job requirements

Requirements:

  • Five to seven years of relevant experience managing energy and climate related teams, either in the energy sector, the EU, government advocacy, or in INGOs.

  • Strong interpersonal and team-working skills, and a willingness to develop a network in both the energy and climate instruments sectors.

  • Demonstrated success in leading cross-functional teams and managing complex projects.

  • Strong network within the European energy and climate policy instruments communities and a solid understanding of international energy issues.

  • Experience in strategic planning and policy analysis, with the ability to think critically and innovatively about the future of energy in Europe and beyond.

  • Good financial acumen, with experience in budget management.

  • Ability to deliver to tight deadlines; eager to learn, with a positive and optimistic attitude when faced with challenges.

  • The confidence to think and act with initiative, to engage and influence policymakers of different stripes, industry representatives and other stakeholders at the highest level.

  • The ability and motivation to learn technical, economic and legal information, to independently develop new political, economic or legal arguments and evidence and use them to convince key stakeholders.
