Data Journalist/ Visualisation expert

T&E already has a great reputation for delivering high quality and influential research, analysis and data. We now want to recruit a data journalist / data visualisation expert to lead and raise to the next level our data visualisation work. You will have a passion for data visualisation; be able to turn our research and analysis into clear and engaging graphics; and craft data-driven stories intended to influence public debate and policy.

You will develop and lead our data visualisation strategy, working closely with the communications, policy, and trends & analysis teams to identify engaging content that tells a powerful story. You will guide and support the team in Brussels as well as our national teams in Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris and Rome, as well as our partner organisation in Warsaw.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement T&E’s data visualisation strategy, including the running and potential expansion of our data visualisation capabilities.

• Provide design and technical support to the whole T&E team, instilling data journalism best practices that help guide them to create high impact graphics.

• Design visualisations for T&E’s priority reports and research.

• Independently identify opportunities to create data visualisations and stories.

• Create and manage data visualisations on our website, including interactive dashboards, and for use on our social media channels.

• Continue to learn new techniques, be creative, and continue to push forward our data visualisation strategy.

Must have

• A passion for creating engaging and impactful data visualisations.

• 3+ years experience in data journalism / visualisation.

• Have strong visualisation skills, with a proven ability to communicate complex information and data.

• Experience in coaching others in data visualisation best practice and technologies.

• Strong team collaboration and an enthusiasm for talking to people.

• Skilled in at least one visualisation technology for digital graphics (e.g. Flourish, Adobe Illustrator).

• Comfortable handling and analysing datasets, either in spreadsheets or programming languages.

• Experience using JavaScript/HTML/CSS to create front-end website visualisations.

• Proactive and willing to develop and implement innovative solutions.

• Attentiveness to detail and the ability to think critically to better evaluate opportunities.

• The ability to communicate clearly and meet deadlines.

Nice to have

• Experience in using one or more programming languages, such as R, python or SQL.

• Experience creating data dashboards.

• Experience in graphic design.

• Strong interest in climate and transport, as well as in news and current affairs.

The position is full-time, ideally based in Brussels but with options to work from other European capitals, with the possibility of flexible working hours.
